Start at night for a good morning

Sleep! You need to sleep; your student needs to sleep. Sometimes there are special events, family visits or other circumstances that might delay bedtime, that's understandable. However, having a set time and routine for the family to wind down and prepare for a good night's sleep is essential. I am not a medical doctor or child psychologist or anything of the sort. I can only speak from my experience.

Before my first son was born, my husband and I read the book Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child by Marc Weissbluth, now in its fifth edition. We revisited specific chapters as our boys grew for a review of age-appropriate recommendations. By understanding the body's need for sleep as well as how to create an environment conducive to healthy sleep habits, we have created two really good sleepers! While our bedtime routine has evolved over the years (since my kids are now teens), the consistency overall brings closure to our night and sends a clear message that the day is done. Some activities we have included in our nighttime routine include:

  • bath/shower

  • a light snack (don't judge)

  • reading - to them when they were little

  • reading - with them as they learned

  • reading - they read independently and then give a brief summary

  • brushing teeth, using deodorant, etc.

We tried to keep the routine to a reasonable amount of time, but it was really the consistency of the activities that has kept us on track for 14+ years now. I know this is not a revolutionary idea, but I hope it helps to know that a successful morning starts at night.
